KISS, ‘Deuce’ – Butch’s Way Back Wednesday

As a music fan there is always something new and great, but there really is something special about the songs you grew up listening to. For me, that was 70′s and 80′s classic rock. If I am in a shi**y mood, I throw in a little Zeppelin or Rush and take a trip back to rolling in my mom’s T-Bird. Now every Wednesday you get to take that trip with me. It’s Way Back Wednesday with Butch, and today’s feature celebrates a song we first heard 40 years ago… KISS', “Deuce.”

KISS can't seem to stay out of the news lately between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, being sued by a former members family, and starting a football team. Oh, and 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of their debut album (KISS) as well.

'Deuce' was written by Gene Simmons and song appeared on Kiss' eponymous 1974 debut album. In addition to being one of the band's most popular and most-covered songs, "Deuce" is a traditional concert opener. The song was performed on almost every tour to date, and has appeared on many Kiss' live and compilation albums, as well on Ace Frehley's.

'Deuce,' like several cuts featured on the band’s debut, boasts another set of conspicuously impenetrable lyrics – quite at odds with the band’s ultra-direct songwriting philosophy in years to come. But then, even the song’s author, Gene Simmons, readily admits he has no idea what the heck he’s going on about on 'Deuce.' And lest that be enough to satisfy you ladies out there because the words have something to do with “your man working hard,” keep in mind that, in early ‘70s New York, 'Deuce' also doubled as hooker street slang for a blow job/intercourse combo. Oh, Gene.
