Global Technology Outage Takes Out Colorado DMV and DIA
When we think of outages, we usually think of the power going out. In fact, that could be happening more in the next few years here in Colorado.
Not only does Xcel Energy want to increase utility bills by 9.56% by 2028, but they also want the ability to shut off equipment if there is a possibility it can spark a wildfire.
However, Xcel hasn’t been behind Colorado’s most recent outage.
In fact, it took out technology across the country and affected many Colorado travelers.
Technology Outage Delays Hundred of Flights at Denver International Airport
On Thursday, a cybersecurity company called CrowdStrike installed what was supposed to be a routine update.
Instead, every operating system that was running Microsoft Windows completely shut down.
This affected different companies and agencies around the world, but it also heavily affected Denver International Airport.
The Denver Post reported that a total of 334 flights had originally been delayed, along with 89 being completely canceled.
Those numbers increased to 430 delayed flights and 95 canceled when all things were said and done.
Fortunately, operations have been able to go back to normal after the situation was largely figured out Friday morning.
However, KDVR reports that there are still multiple different airlines on ground stop and multiple different airports around the country are closed, including LaGuardia Airport in New York and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
Colorado DMV Also Hit By Technology Outage
Colorado’s DMV was also affected by the outage, taking out multiple different services.
According to KDVR, those include Online DMV services, express kiosks, call centers, country motor vehicle office services, and drivers license and ID services.
Unlike how the problem seemed to be resolved over at DIA, the Colorado DMV is still working out the issues posed by the outage.
Other places have also been affected, with Pueblo County Government completely closing on Friday.
