Def Leppard, ‘Photograph’ – Butch’s Way Back Wednesday

As a music fan there is always something new and great, but there really is something special about the songs you grew up listening to. For me, that was 70's and 80's classic rock. If I am in a shi**y mood, I throw in a little Zeppelin or Rush and take a trip back to rolling in my mom's T-Bird. Now every Wednesday you get to take that trip with me. It's Way Back Wednesday with Butch, and today's feature is from a band coming to our neck of the woods next Wednesday night... "Photograph" by Def Leppard. 

I started Way Back Wednesday over a year and a half ago, and this was the first song I ever featured, simply because it is one of my favorite songs of all time! I thought it would be cool to come back and revisit it because Def Leppard and KISS will be coming to visit us at the Pepsi Center one week from today!

From the 1983 album Pyromania, Def Leppard hit the nail on the head and came up with their first big hit with "Photograph." The song spent 6 weeks at #1 No. 1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart, and was named he 13th greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.

In the video, there are photos of Marilyn Monroe, and Singer Joe Elliott often stated before playing the song live that it was written as a tribute to the late actress, but he contradicted himself in a later interview and explained the song is more generally about "something you can't ever get your hands on."
