Winger, ‘Seventeen’ – Butch’s Way Back Wednesday
As a music fan there is always something new and great, but there really is something special about the songs you grew up listening to. For me, that was 70′s and 80′s classic rock. If I am in a shi**y mood, I throw in a little Zeppelin or Rush and take a trip back to rolling in my mom’s T-Bird. Now every Wednesday you get to take that trip with me. It’s Way Back Wednesday with Butch, and today’s feature is a song we first heard 25 years ago this month in 1988… Winger’s, “Seventeen.”
"Seventeen" was released by Winger, from their debut album Winger. Released in 1988, the song charted at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite the pop metal sound, Kip Winger points out that the tune is musically a progressive song and that it is actually quite challenging to play and sing simultaneously. Along with Headed for a Heartbreak, it is Winger's most popular song for which they are most remembered by.
The song was named the 87th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.
Winger also has tight Colorado ties, as lead singer, Kip Winger was born and raised in Denver. He had a couple Colorado based bands, Blackwood Creek and Colorado, before moving away and starting Winger.
After a couple breakups and hiatuses, Winger is still together as a band today. They play together on mini tours, special gigs as well as private gigs.
Now take a trip back 25 years with us to 1988...
