This Just In – Weed Brownies Aren’t Safe For Kids

Now that weed in small amounts is legal in Colorado it has quickly become a much more accepted vice. One of the reasons more and more people are getting high is because unlike other drugs, you can put THC in food, eat it, and get even higher than smoking it. Problem is, when the kids see brownies sitting around they are going to eat them, and pot isn't good for kids.
Of course, there are serious concerns about making pot more readily available and easier to buy. In fact, according to National Public Radio, doctors in Colorado found a slight rise in cases of young kids who showed up at emergency rooms suffering from “pretty severe symptoms from consuming marijuana” such as extreme lethargy and difficulty breathing.
Dr. George Sam Wang of Colorado’s Children’s Hospital wrote in this week’s JAMA Pediatrics that since Colorado softened its marijuana laws in 2009, his hospital treated 14 kids younger than 12 for marijuana consumption and seven of those cases involved kids who had eaten a pot-infused food. Even though pot may not be considered as dangerous for adults, its rising potency can present serious problems to young children. In fact, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed a bill that requires dispensaries to sell their brownies, cookies and other marijuana foods in child-resistant packaging. So it’s really a win-win for everyone. Not only will the kids stay safe while society enjoys pot, we’ll also be treated to hours of endless amusement as easily confused stoners struggle to open their THC-infused Rice Krispie Treat.
