Shawn Prepares You For Snow With His Favorite ‘Snow’ Songs
last year we had a major snow storm October, the first snow of this season looks to be a little milder. But quite honestly I still don't know if I am ready! Ready or not, we are in for it starting with rain this afternoon, and then snow off and on from tonight until Friday for most of Northern Colorado. To help you and I both prepare for the white stuff here are my top "snow" songs...
Immigrant Song
Led ZeppelinOK, so I had to stretch a little here, but if you know me, I will find a way to get Zeppelin on the list. Although, most of their songs are tough to figure out exactly what Robert Plant is singing about, it's pretty clear this song is not about snow. He does however say in the very first line that "We come from the land of the ice and snow." Tomorrow that line will be very true for us. That is all I have HA-HA!
Snowbound
GenesisGenesis is lucky that I like them, because I really do not particularly like this song. I loved "Follow You, Follow Me," and "Snowbound" happened to be on the same album that I wore out because of one song. And as you can tell from the title I didn't have to stretch this time, definitely a good old snow song!
Wintertime Love
The DoorsNot one of the most popular songs the Doors ever released, but in my opinion one of the best vocal performances that Jim Morrison ever displayed. Snow is never actually mentioned in the song, but implied. Definitely puts you in the blanket and fireplace mood.
Winter
Rolling StonesThis could be the tune we are all singing by Wednesday night, hoping for a long hot summer just like the Stones in this tune. A few interesting facts about the song include Keith Richards had nothing to do with the song including not playing a note of it, and a sort of cliche that the song about winter was recorded in the heat of Jamaica. Though it bemoans many of the negatives of the season [in the] lyrics... "Winter" seems to simultaneously celebrate the season as something inherently beautiful, with other evocations of holiday scenes and wanting to wrap a coat and keep a lover warm.
First Snow on Brooklyn
Jethro TullSomething about the flute and snow just go together like a cold hand and a warm glove. Weird that the song was actually featured on Tull's 2003 Christmas album and we are playing it in October I know, but it's not really a Christmas song, and if you change Brooklyn to Colorado it really works!
A Winter's Tale
David EssexIf I heard this song without knowing that it was David Essex I would not believe it was him! We know him for "Rock On," but he really slows it down and gives a warm fuzzy feeling well singing about the cold white stuff.
A Hazy Shade of Winter
Simon & GarfunkelThe lyrics evoke the passage of the seasons, but (as the title suggests) focusing on the gloominess of winter. The song really works for a fall snow storm with the color of the leaves and the haze in the sky. Kind of a forgotten song from Simon and Garfunkel because of the success of "Mrs. Robinson" from the same album, but "A Hazy Shade of Winter" made it all the way to #2 in 1988.
Cold Rain and Snow
Grateful DeadI have to admit that I have only heard this song a time or two, and mostly only real Dead Heads are familiar with this tune, and most of the album it came from, but the song is perfect for our little list here, so there ya go!
Wintertime
Steve Miller BandThis to me is the greatest winter/snow there is because it just sound likes winter. You don't even have to listen to the lyrics to feel like you need to put your coat on and get some hot cocoa.
