I didn't post last week for this feature so I'm combining two weeks in one. This time of year gets pretty sparse for NEW releases anyway but we will have some awesome greatest hits, live and expanded editions of albums you already have. YES! No. Don't buy those. Have I gone down that road with you already? How much of a dummy am I that I would buy your greatest hits record in this day and age of digital single downloads? I may be a dummy but I'm not that kind of dummy. The ONLY reason to buy a greatest hits record is to give yourself a crash course on a band you don't know much about. In that case, they can be a good starting point. As for 'expanded' editions that contain some 'bonus' live DVD or other not really a bonus, nonsense.....NO. I will not buy a copy of the same disc I ALREADY bought just because it features a live show you recorded and slapped on a DVD. I get that a guy's gotta pay the bills and I don't even really blame the labels or bands for putting these things out but I do blame you if you buy them. I blame you even more if you steal them but that's a topic for another post.

Also, because I get e-mails on a fairly regular basis, featuring 4 letter laced tirades about how I do a show on a rock station and I should only post about rock records, I (much like mostly everyone) dig all types of music so I won't JUST post about rock and metal. It's not like you HAVE to listen to these albums. These are just things I like, that you may want to enjoy. If I COULD force you to do whatever I typed here, believe you me, it would be WAY more dastardly and financially beneficial to me.

Let's pause for a minute to think about how AWESOME that would be....

Okay. On to this weeks (and last weeks) music. I'm assuming you know Eminem put a (cool) new record out and Lady Gaga didn't so I'll skip those:

The Melvins 'Tres Cabrones'

The Melvins are a brand new band that I think you should like. OR they are celebrating their 30th anniversary. It's the second thing. This new record features the band's (mostly) original lineup if that matters to you. Maybe it should matter to me but what really matters to me is how much I love it. I mean, there is a song called 'Tie My Pecker To A Tree' (something you probably should never do) man. The album title translates roughly to "Three....Cabrones" and it's a damn enjoyable cabrone to listen to. It is also worth noting that Ipecac Records is owned by Mike Patton of Faith No More, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Mr.Bungle, Peeping Tom...just to name nine. Tracks to start with include 'Doctor Mule', 'Dogs And Cattle Prods' and 'City Dump'.

Buck Owens "Buck 'Em: The Music Of Buck Owens (1955-1967)

So, someone posted some stuff about how crappy greatest hits records are. That guy is a MORON because this one is fantastic. Maybe it's because I grew up listening to Buck Owens or maybe it's just because this stuff is timeless but, man, I can't find a dud on this entire two disc set. There are something like 578 songs on it so, that's saying something. You may not dig current country music (even though there is some cool stuff out there) but if you dig classic country, rockabilly-ish stuff and you don't know Buck Owens, this is definitely something to check out. This is obviously not for you if it isn't but if it is, it REALLY is. A book of the same name just came out which I plan on reading too. The guy was a pioneer and if you don't think so......wait for it.....wait....you can Buck off. Or buck yourself. Motherbucker. Tracks to start with include 'Down On The Corner Of Love', 'Foolin' Around', 'Truck Drivin' Man' and every other song here.

This video is essentially a commercial but it gives you a good idea of what it is and I couldn't find anything else that wouldn't lead to me being sued...Bucking lawyers anyway. Did I kill the wordplay already?

Dagoba "Post Mortem Nihil Est"

This band is clearly influence by Buck Owens. They hail from France which means they feel like they're better than you are and they drink wine and eat cheese most of the day. If you can get past that, you'll find a pretty cool record. If heavy with some melody is your glass of chardonnay, then check out 'I Reptile' , 'The Day After The Apocalypse' and the album opener 'When Winter..'.

So there it is. This isn't the greatest week ever for releases but there are some strong options for you. I'm going to end today's post (and maybe all of these new music posts) with a classic album that I think you should add to your collection if you haven't. I'm calling it the:

Get The Hell Off My Lawn Classic Album Of The Week

Refused "The Shape Of Punk To Come"

This is one of those, if it came out today it would still rule kind of albums. This record is HUGELY influential on a lot of band you probably love. There are jazzy moments, reggae tinges, blues samples, killer drum and guitar gallops topped by fantastic screamy vocals. They broke up soon after this came out way back in 1998 and reformed for one show in 2012. The singer went on to form (International) Noise Conspiracy whom you may know as well. His current band AC4 has been signed to Deathwish Records. You really need to hear the whole record but here is the first song I ever hear from them:

As always, I'd love to know what you're listening to. E-mail me, ma man.
