It was on this day back in 1983 that one of the most famous baseball players in the game, Dave Winfield of the New York Yankees, hit and killed a seagull with a baseball while playing catch in during a game in Toronto. Winfield was later arrest by Toronto police for the incident, and later acquitted, but the incident became one of the most famous animal in sports moments. That got us here at 94.3 MAX-FM thinking about other animal in sports moments, and I remember ESPN's Sportscenter did a "Top Ten" segment a few years back on that very subject.

You have to feel bad for the poor animals that get hurt, so I find myself cheering for the animals to make it, like the pig, you really hope he gets away. But, I have to say the most memorable animal in sports moment for me would be when Randy Johnson hit the dove with one of the worlds fastest fastballs. Of course that bird didn't fair very well in the situation, but he will never be forgotten unlike his brother who died a boring death falling out of the nest late one night. Some other memorable animals in sports that ESPN didn't include that I remember are the water skiing squirrel and the dog riding monkey. This just proves that sometimes especially in slow sports (baseball and golf) even the animals get bored and decide to step in and lighten the game up.
