Michael Sam Signs a Contract With The CFL

I have to admit, I am not an NFL scout nor do I get paid professionally to evaluate talent. So I am not qualified to say that this guy should be in the NFL. I do know a few things about football though. At Missouri in 2013, he was named the co-Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year.

Before Micheal Sam came out as the first openly gay player to be drafted, he was considered a third round pick to an early fourth round pick by many paid to make these estimations.

Being from Colorado I know what it means to have a distraction in terms of off the field. We all know what happened with Tim Tebow and the media circus that followed him. What difficulty it meant to the players coaches and the locker room.

I also realize that when the Rams selected Sam, the team was stacked with talent at his position and taking him in the seventh round meant his odds of making the team were slim.

But if he hadn't come out (as a homosexual) before the draft he probably would have gone to a team with a need at his position with a 3rd to 4th round pick which would have given him the opportunity to play for an NFL team. He would have probably been afforded the time to work his way into a starting role as many rookies need.

We have had some pretty amazing players come out after their NFL careers were over, in fact a player that I always thought was amazing was Esera Tuaolo. He was also the last player to ever tackle John Elway.

We needed a player to come out and be open about it. I hate to say it, but maybe Michael Sam should have waited until he made his way in the NFL. Then maybe he could have been the first openly homosexual player actively playing in the NFL. Someone needed to do it. Unfortunately I think the media circus ruined his opportunity.

Maybe if he shows his talent in the CFL the NFL will give him a fair chance. I mean he did have 3 sacks in the preseason with the Rams.
