Stark Contrast Between Colorado + Border States’ Recent Tornadoes

While Hollywood has made a connection with tornadoes and states like Kansas and Oklahoma with films like The Wizard of Oz and Twister, Colorado is no stranger to the effects of funnel clouds.

Of course, tornadoes are much more prevalent in the states that border Colorado from the east, but new research shows that the Centennial State's neighbors show a stark contrast when it comes to tornado sightings as a whole.

How Prevalent are Tornadoes in Colorado?

The recent data from the World Population Review reports a total of 31 tornado sightings in Colorado in 2024, with, luckily, zero casualties resulting from them.

Which States Report More Tornadoes than Colorado?

It should come as no surprise that the states that reported more tornadoes than Colorado in 2024 are Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

However, the numbers are rather staggering as Kansas reported 89 with one casualty, Oklahoma reported 91 and eight casualties, and Nebraska reported 131 tornadoes with no casualties in 2024.

Which States Report Fewer Tornadoes than Colorado?

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the states that border Colorado that reported fewer tornadoes in 2024, which include New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, and Utah.

In 2024, New Mexico reported 11 tornadoes, Arizona reported six, Wyoming reported five, and Utah reported only three tornadoes. In addition, no tornado-related casualties were reported in any of these states in 2024.

Based on this data, it's easy to assume that the staggering contrast between these states is directly related to the Rocky Mountains and the Continental Divide, but the sheer difference in numbers is fascinating, to say the least.
