
Ski Areas by State: Colorado Isn’t Number One on the List
We are weeks away from the start of the 2025-2026 ski season here in Colorado. Our state is known far and wide for some of the best ski resorts in the United States, and it's not hard to see why.

Anywhere you look in Colorado, you will find plenty of ski and snowboard shops, especially in Denver, before heading up to the mountains to shred on fresh powder.
How Many Ski Resorts Are in Colorado?
One thing that may surprise you is the number of ski areas and resorts that are located in Colorado. While we may have a lot of places to hit the slopes, we don't have as many as other states.

Tied for third place, Colorado has a total of 33 ski areas and resorts to partake in your favorite winter activity, but there are a couple of other states that top the list, and they are ones you might not expect.

Believe it or not, there are two states located in the Midwest that either have the same number of ski areas or more. The state of Wisconsin tied with Colorado for the number of ski areas at 33, and the relatively flat state of Michigan actually has more places to hit the slopes with 40 ski areas.
The State With the Most Ski Areas: New York
The state that has the most ski areas is another state you might not expect to be home to a vast amount of ski slopes. New York has the most ski areas of any state in the nation, beating out Colorado, California, Montana, and Utah, with 52 ski areas throughout the Empire State.
