WNBA Expansion: New Teams Announced in 2025

On Monday, June 30th officials from the Women's National Basketball Association made an exciting announcement.
Three new expansion teams will be added to the league over the course of the next few years. The WNBA will be adding teams in Detroit, Cleveland, and Philadelphia.
Detroit and Cleveland have already played host to a team, but this will be the first time that professional women's hoops will be coming to the City of Brotherly Love, according to an official press release.
Cleveland's team is set to start playing in the league in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philly in 2030.
I'm happy for all of these fans and the cities that will get to have their own teams.

Why Doesn’t Colorado Have a WNBA Team Yet?

Still, I'm left wondering...where is Colorado's WNBA team?

The Business of WNBA Expansion: Is Colorado Missing Out?

Three new WNBA expansion teams have been announced to take place over the course of the next 5 years and you still haven't signed the dotted line to get a team in Colorado?!?
It's becoming a lucrative business venture. With the impact of basketball star Caitlin Clark on sports and culture in general, we're seeing that there is a massive audience for even more women's sports.
How Much Money Is Caitlin Clark Bringing Into the WNBA?
Not only was she named TIME Magazine's Athlete of the Year in 2024, but she's bringing in more money to the WNBA than ever before. Clark has brought in millions in endorsement deals with Gatorade, Nike, and Wilson, according to reports.
These partnerships alone are worth approximately $11.4 million.
Not too shabby, right?
Ticket Sales, Sponsorships & Revenue: Why Hosting a WNBA Team Makes Sense
Along with broadcast rights, jersey and ticket sales are bringing in a whole lot of dollars and cents to the team's respective host city. Last year, the WNBA brought in $200 million, according to Market Watch.
Colorado Teams Prove That Sports = Profit
Colorado teams bring in massive revenue (no matter how bad they are).
Look at the Colorado Rockies! While they have a poor record this season, they're still making money.
In 2025, they are estimated to be worth approximately $1.48 billion, according to Statista.
Imagine what a new basketball league could do in Colorado!

Are you aware that there's a big hole in the west when it comes to women's basketball?
Each year that goes by, the state of Colorado is essentially sending people who want to root for a team here in the West out to California.
They've got two teams.
And how many WNBA teams do we have?
ZERO!
WNBA Superstar Coach Becky Hammon Is a CSU Grad
To top it all off, one of the best coaches in the WNBA right now came from CSU.
She's become a legend in the W.
Her team went on to win back to back national championships, AND she's got A'ja Wilson on her roster.
I'm talking about the Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon.
There's an audience here for women's sports and already a legacy of basketball greats from Northern Colorado.
All that's left is a WNBA team and people to invest in more women's sports.
We're getting another team in Detroit and another team in Cleveland.
