Because of its once-booming mining industry, Colorado is home to numerous ghost towns.

Located in Ouray County, Ironton was established in 1883 and came up from the ground quickly, as in its infancy, over 100 buildings were built in 21 days.

The town was originally called 'Cooper's Glen,' with a derogatory nickname of 'Ironton' due to the mines only producing a low-grade iron. However, once the post office was established it took the name of Ironton and it stuck.

Although the town was nearly deserted by the early 1900s, one family stuck around until the early 1960s, after which it was totally abandoned.
