Are Swings Too Dangerous for Our Kids?
It seems that swings have been determined to be the most dangerous piece of playground equipment. Yeah? So?
Bowing to pressure from the EVIL insurance companies, some school districts in Washington State are removing swings from their playgrounds. Supposedly, swings cause the most injuries compared to all the other playground equipment. Because they are TOTALLY the most fun.
It's odd that I came across this piece of news because just the other day, as I was driving past an elementary school, I noticed the kids swinging on the playground and it got me thinking about how perfect the swing is. Modern toys for kids are so different than they were when I was growing up. Technology changes and improves so fast. We had Ataris, kids today have PS4s, but the swing is universal, man! Timeless.
Kids love swings. No matter your background, your country, your ethnicity. No matter if you are rich or poor. It's a human thing. Understood by all.
Playground swing sets provide REAL LIFE, physical experience, too. You learn to wait your turn. You learn to jump and take risks, and you learn to get back up when you fall.
I hope Colorado doesn't follow Washington in this. We all grew up with swings. Let's keep them accessible to our kids.
