25 Years Ago ‘Take My Breath Away’ By Berlin Was America’s #1 Song [VIDEO]

Kind of odd that on the same day that we found out Top Gun is set to be re-released to theaters in 3D, the movie celebrated another big day. Berlin's ''Take My Breath Away'' pushed Top Gun's soundtrack to the top of the pop album charts in 1986 for five weeks, and made it the fifth best selling movie soundtrack of all time. 25 years ago today that same song enjoyed it's greatest success, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "Take my Breath Away" was written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock, performed by the band Berlin. It quickly became one of the biggest songs of the year winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1986. Because of the song's success, it easily became Berlin's biggest hit, but it ultimately would end up being their last as well.
